Life member of Boydton Life Station inc. Alan served 3 years as Captain and 4 years as a lieutenant, with more than 8 years of ALS service. Alan has been working in the EMS and Fire fighting field for over 25 years. Fire fighting training was completed with the United States Coast Guard in 1973. Alan also volunteered with the city of Norfolk fire department as the operator of the ladies auxiliary coffee wagon. As a certified search and recover diver the City of Norfolk Police Department called on Alan for various emergencies also. While living in Norfolk, Alan served as President of the Estabrook civic league for 5 terms Vice President 1 term, and secretary for 2 terms, he was also Vice President of the Norfolk Federation of civic leagues for one term. During the time of his civic league evolvement he was also the Scoutmaster for Boy Scout troop 25.
In 1979 Alan was introduced to history Reenactments of the Mountain man, and Revolutionary war time periods. Since that time he has won numerous awards for Muzzle loading, Knife, Tomahawk, and woods skills and is well known in the reenactment arena. His yard has a rendezvous area that has been used by many groups including the Eastern Mountain Man Association. He is also the president of The Virginia Free Trappers, a group formed in 1984 with the help of his brother Arthur M. Haddaway Jr. who died in 1999.
After service in the Military during the Viet Nam era Alan went back to Norfolk and ran Haddaway Tree Surgery, tidewaters oldest tree service. Started by his Grandfather in the early 1920’s and third generation owner. As a climber he won two State climbing awards from the National Shade Tree Conference. After 12 years in the tree business Alan then folded the company and returned to school where he earned his first degree in electronics. With his main degree in electronics Alan worked for CPT Corporation as well as Landmark Communications as technical support manager and also as a research and development engineer. In 1986 he and an engineer from the Federal Department of Transportation designed and installed the hard drive upgrade for the Federal Aviation Administrations B-22 Burroughs computer systems. He also at that time was the first to design and interface the Totec OCR scanner and a Burroughs, Prime, Gould, Lanier, NCR, and Convergent Technologies computers systems. Wrote and taught electronics classes in more than 20 states and for companies that include Memorex, New Jersey State Education, Pennsylvania state education, M.I.T., Cooks Children’s Hospital, and many others. As the owner of Hardware Solutions Co. in Norfolk he retired in 1990 and moved to Mecklenburg county Virginia where he started in the EMS field and worked as a copier technician.
After working for an Ambulance transport service for three years Alan made the decision to open an ambulance transport company in Farmville. With the backing of his family, and the support of friends in the Farmville and Mecklenburg areas Paladin Medical Transport Inc. was born.
